About me

my name is madison howard, and I was born and raised in alabama. i attained a b.a. in studio art from the university of montevallo. most of my life, i have focused on drawing and printmaking. after struggling to make meaningful work, i realized post-college-art-burnout that my biggest enjoyment came from exploring processes of making art rather than achieving a particular end result. (although end result aesthetic value is still super important to me). i started exploring film photography as a way to spend less time composing an image, and more time experimenting with development and printing techniques. i currently shoot mostly black and white images, and self-develop, scan, and print my work. my work has been featured in various small zines and publications, and some of my drawings and paintings have been exhibited in juried shows in texas, where i lived for a time. my painting ‘old man’ was chosen for exhibition in the 2021 georgetown art center’s texas art crawl, and a drawing of mine, based on a found photograph, won honorable mention at round rock art council’s digital themed spring show in 2021. i am currently compiling work for a photo book or zine.

this blog began as a way to document my entry into photography, and after i got started lots of life changes occurred. namely, i moved from texas to alabama and started a new job. thus, posts lapsed for a while. i am trying to document my shooting, developing, scanning, and printing processes – as well as posting for each roll i shoot. i would also like to start reviewing some of the cameras i already own, which are mostly cheap soviet cameras.

“You are always learning. At the end of each day, you know something you didn’t know at the beginning. We’re all learning on the job. This is true even when the thing you learned is that you know less than you thought.”
